Tackling Food waste- a personal journey
About a year and a half ago (summer of 2013), I took a class in Writing for Science. It was a wonderful class taught by a wonderful Professor who incidentally is a journalist at the New York Times as well (Claudia Dreifus.) One of the first assignments she asked us to work on was an Op-Ed piece with a scientific theme but for the general public. I chose to write on Food Waste in NYC and the impacts. Understanding Organics Recycling in the context of cities:
When I had initially moved to Manhattan 3+ years ago, I used to get very depressed, overwhelmed, and appalled at seeing all the trash around me. Once a week, huge black bags would leave our apartment building, which I would instantly multiply by the number of buildings in Manhattan times number of boroughs in NYC (Manhattan being one of the four boroughs/areas) and feel even more depressed, overwhelmed and alarmed! The much heard of 3Rs
So what are they? The old ones used to be read, write (pronounced rite) and arithmetic (you get how it’s the third R :-) The new ones are reuse, recycle and reduce. Of course, my blog being named what it is, this topic focuses on the former. Of the three, I think the most important is reduce. This means buying less, using less and thus causing reduced pollution, waste everything. But, many economists (and business owners!) would think this is not good if people buy less. So l

Welcome: Composting & Hydroponics
I have been eager to try both these concepts out; it sounds so green and romantic..turning waste into something useful. But first, I’ll have to learn about it.
